Odisha govt launches online payment system for electricity bills by panchayats

Payment delays across the electricity sector are a significant cause for concern. Panchayat bodies in Odisha spend approximately INR 250 crore annually on electricity bills for street lighting, water supply, and other activities. However, delayed payments to the DISCOM have led to arrears. 

The online payment system aims to streamline payments by panchayat bodies.

The online payment system is expected to facilitate timely payments by local government bodies to power utilities. It is a welcome step towards reducing arrears and building financial discipline among panchayats. 

Will this move by the Odisha government inspire other states to find solutions to reduce payment delays within the power sector?
