Hydrogen vehicles can be effective in the heavy freight segment due to their longer range and faster refuelling time. There have been scattered efforts to promote hydrogen vehicles in the country. The pilot project under the National Green Hydrogen Mission is a positive move towards assessing the potential of and implementing hydrogen vehicle use in India. The project follows a two-pronged approach: encouraging the use of green hydrogen (GH2) as fuel in buses and trucks and supporting GH2 refuelling stations.
In the past, there have been efforts to set up electric highway corridors in the country. Will the electrification and hydrogen fuel efforts be blended to ensure that these clean fuel vehicle categories can function in tandem?
Will this pilot project help in creating further carve-outs in the government’s budget to ensure that hydrogen vehicles emerge as a viable commercial option for certain vehicle categories?
