Reenergizing India's Solar Energy Market Through Financing

Solar

Financing remains the largest barrier to the expansion of India's solar energy market. Investments are expected to grow during the NSM's second phase, and yet, securing project financing is one of the greatest challenges for solar energy in India. The right policy settings and incentive structures must be adopted before solar investment will really take off in India. Diverse financial policies, some currently adopted by the central government and many that have proved successful on the state level or internationally, can help fuel India's solar market.

Solar Power Jobs: Exploring the Employment Potential in India's Grid Connected Solar Market

Solar

Solar energy projects create green jobs and provide a boost to India's developing economy. In a country where keeping up with the growing population's increasing energy demands is daunting, harnessing this clean and renewable energy source can help meet energy needs in a sustainable way while providing new economic opportunities. Solar photovoltaic (PV) is recognized as creating more jobs per unit of energy produced than any other energy source; thus it potentially represents a much needed solution to unemployment in the face of India's burgeoning population and labour force.

Renewables Beyond Electricity: Solar Air Conditioning and Desalination in India

Solar

The potential of renewable energy is not only limited to electricity generation, but also for a variety of applications (heating, cooling, mechanical and cooking) spanning across several sectors (residential, commercial and industrial). With the objective to promote and create awareness about renewable energy applications, WWF India and CEEW undertook a comprehensive analytical study of two renewable energy technologies, namely, solar air conditioning and solar desalination.

ONGOING RESEARCH
  • Research on Scaling ‘Solar India’ by Unleashing Clean Job Opportunities and Deploying Financial Solutions. CEEW in association with NRDC, and supported by Shakti Foundation is working on a project to estimate the jobs created in the solar and wind energy sector. As part of the project we  would also be conducting a series of roundtables on the financing opportunities and challenges for solar energy in India. To gauge the views of the developers the first roundtable was organised on 31st October in New Delhi. The roundtable minutes are available here.
