8 May 2012

Today CEEW hosted Prof Roberto Lenton, Director of the Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Institute at the University of Nebraska and one of the world’s foremost experts in water management, for a roundtable with water and agriculture specialists on "Managing Water for Food Security". Part of CEEW's regular Roundtables on Sustainability Finance and Technology, this interaction focused on the integrating water management and food security issues, that is producing more with less water. Prof. Lenton, a former chairperson of the independent World Bank Inspection Panel and one of the founders of the International Water Management Institute in Sri Lanka, highlighted the importance of understanding different sources of water stress and the need to find solutions at different levels of governance, from farmers to watersheds to national level implications of water demand. CEEW presented its work on water under four thematic areas: national water resources framework; institutional reforms (international practices and its work in Bihar); data and measurement issues; and integrated energy, environment and water plans at the state level.
